Australian Made Childrens Clothing – Bandicute

Producing unique kids clothes with Bandicute’s mother-daughter duo.

Bandicute Australian Made Children's clothing

Ellen and Jess of Bandicute are a mother-daughter duo who are passionate about Australian Made childrens clothing. Both intensely creative, they spent years formulating business ideas, but nothing stuck. After Jess had her daughters, she found it difficult to source quality and ethically Australian made kids clothes. She wanted something that felt unique, fun, and not as traditionally gendered as the vast majority of pieces she came across.

Over the years, Ellen had developed a love of printmaking, and Jess had completed a degree in Natural History Illustration. From their combined talents, Bandicute was born.

Bandicute doesn’t just make clothes. They design every piece in their range from scratch, right down to the fabric. The process begins with 100% cotton, or occasionally a cotton/linen or cotton/hemp blend. From there, they add designs and illustrations to produce a variety of patterns and colour combinations. Their designs are either digitally printed, hand-dyed, or hand stamped using block printing.

Block printing is a process that involves hand carving a design onto a rubber stamp, then applying a special ink to the surface and stamping it onto the fabric. Bandicute’s inks are all safe for your little ones’ skin, and their designs are also heat set for longevity. Despite being hand-stamped or dyed, they can be washed many times over and still come out looking fresh!

Their pieces feature bright colours and fun animal prints, from Australian natives to bees and farm animals, as well as patterns made from flowers, leaves, and more. Above all else, they aim for their range to be fun. As Ellen and Jess have told us, life should be fun, and kids want to have fun!

According to Ellen and Jess, one of the best parts of the support they receive from their customers is how it allows them to give back. They donate a portion of their proceeds to several charity partners, including Two Thumbs Wildlife Trust, Hive Aid and Tandum – Girls Deserving Dignity.

Here at Handmade, we make it a priority to give back to the community. We partner with Givit to provide support locally for several causes. We love to see our designers and producers get behind Charity Partners of their own, and use their small businesses for good. You can read more about Bandicutes’ fantastic charity partnerships on their website.
