Your Guide to the Market Weekend

With only one sleep to go, it’s time to think about the practicalities of coming to Handmade this weekend. You already know that there will be over 270 stalls of the finest Australian design and produce, all under one roof at EPIC. You already know that we have a whole hall devoted to food and drink. With so many options you won’t go hungry or thirsty, whatever your taste. And you  already know that Handmade is the place to find the perfect gift, piece for your wardrobe, present for the kids and items for your home. But here are some things you might not know.

Canberra’s Light Rail is open for business! The EPIC and Racecourse stop is a short walk from the market, making the new service perfect for Handmade shoppers. For timetables and exact locations of the stops, visit the Transport Canberra website HERE.

The roads are fairly clear of roadworks around EPIC. You can access it from all sides. There are three entry points – one from Flemington Road, one from Stirling Road (by the McDonalds) and the other from Old Well Station Road. You can find a map link HERE.

Whichever entrance you use, head to the arena, where parking attendants will be waiting to help you. It’s then a short walk to our three halls – the Budawang Building, Conference Centre and Coorong Pavilion. We know it’s going to be busy so the EPIC team has laid on as many helpers as possible, but your patience would be much appreciated. Of course, there is disabled parking at the front of the Pavilions. And parking is FREE.

Once you have arrived and parked, you’ll want to see what’s going on, so here is a list of things we think you might need to know to help make your market experience easy.

The market is open on both Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 4pm. If you would like to arrive in the morning, there will be coffee and snacks available in our gourmet food hall from 9.50am. This way, you can start the day with your caffeine fix before shopping begins at 10.

Most of our designers and producers have eftpos facilities to take payment. However, there are smaller emerging designers that may not, so we recommend you bring along some cash. There are three ATMs in the two halls, so you won’t be caught short.

Where do we start? Coffee, cold drinks, snacks, meals and sweet treats are all available in our gourmet food hall, the Coorong Pavilion, along with wine and other drinks. There is also coffee stall and some delicious sweet treats on offer in the Budawang Building. We hope we’ve catered for all tastes and dietary requirements, so please enjoy taking your pick.

If you have come to visit particular designers, or maybe you are on a strict time limit, there is a list/map of stalls between the halls. Or seek out our friendly Handmade staff at the reception desk. For a full directory listing by category, including stall locations, check out the DIRECTORY on the website. And you can pick up one of our useful market guides at the door or from reception with a handy list and map. You can also find a listing and some beautiful images in our online HANDMADE MAGAZINE, or to find out more about our amazing designers and producers, head to our BLOG for articles and interviews.

There are several toilets in each hall, with baby changing and a breastfeeding room available in the corridor adjacent to the Coorong Pavilion. Please ask at reception (between the halls) if you’re lost.

Entry to the Handmade Market is free. We do ask however, that you give a gold coin donation to our chosen charity as you walk in. The lovely volunteers from BOSOM BUDDIES will be our door greeters this weekend. Bosom Buddies ACT is a charitable organisation of volunteers who provide personal support to breast cancer patients and their families and supporters in the ACT and surrounding region. Thank you for supporting this great cause.

We are delighted to welcome the team from VINNIES again this year. Their night patrol van can be found on the streets of Canberra every Winter, giving out blankets, warm clothing, toiletries and a friendly listening ear to the people who are doing it tough over the Winter. Last year, your donations of adult-sized clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags were enough to keep the van going for a large part of the Winter. This year, we’d love to be able to help them get the through the whole season! Please drop your donations off near the coffee stand (The Bearded Brewer) in the Budawang Building.

We hope you have a wonderful visit to Handmade, thank you for supporting Australian designers and wish you a safe and enjoyable weekend. Please share your experience at Handmade, using our hashtag #handmadecbr – we’d love to see your purchases!
