Our May Charities

At Handmade, we like to give back to the local community, and at no time is it more important than in Winter, when those less fortunate than us are battling the elements and doing it tough. We are therefore very happy to be welcoming Vinnies back to the Handmade Market on 5 & 6 May for the annual blanket drive.Vinnies has a stall at the market, where we are asking you to donate any warm items that will help. Last year, your donations allowed the night van to distribute blankets, warm clothes and basic sanitary items to the homeless of Canberra for over a month of the hard Winter. We would like to collect even more this year so that the night van can dispense hot drinks, warm clothes and a listening ear to the people that need it.

The Vinnies Night Patrol has been operating in the Canberra region since August 2001, providing refreshments and friendly faces to people on the streets every night of the year. The Night Patrol teams are made up of enthusiastic and compassionate volunteers from within the community who receive specialised training to help support those in need. Adding warm clothes to their offering is important in Winter for the homeless, people at risk and those in need.

Blankets, coats, gloves, hats, sleeping bags and basics such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand wash etc. will all be gratefully received, so have a look in your cupboards for old things you don’t need and please give generously. We have created and event on Facebook to remind you – the link is HERE.

Coming to Handmade is free and always will be. However, on your way in, we ask that you give a gold coin donation to our door charity. This May, we will be welcoming Dragons Abreast, so please put some money in the collection and give the wonderful volunteers a smile. Dragons Abreast runs dragon boat racing in Canberra for cancer survivors, which raises money and supports women who are recovering in a positive way.
