A Weekend in CBR

It’s such a beautiful time to be in the nation’s capital. Spring has changed the landscape and for the moment, the scenery is green, lush and scented, with clear sunsets that make us all stop and stare. It’s a time to be outside, to meet friends and share a meal, to walk, bike and drive around the region. To sample its produce, marvel at its architecture and enjoy this little slice of country in the city.

The Handmade Market is celebrating its tenth birthday, ten years of bringing the best of Australian design and produce to Canberra. At the market next weekend, we will be giving away a $100 gift card every hour and celebrating with product collaborations and our usual mix of gourmet delights and stylish gifts, homewares and fashion. You could spend the whole weekend in the Budawang and Coorong Pavilions, browsing and buying. But when you have spent more than your full budget and you need a breath of fresh air, there are a number of activities and events to tempt you.

You can combine a trip to the iconic Parliament House with a viewing of the exhibition of artworks showing the façade in all its glory. Getting close to the building and its 81 metre flagpole is something to behold, so if you’re just in Canberra for the weekend, it should be on your list.

Canberra’s country location doesn’t mean it’s not a cultural centre. To quote Bell Shakespeare, “Julius Caesar is Shakespeare’s political thriller, a masterpiece of intrigue and treachery. Stand witness to the assassination that leads to a life and death struggle for power in the Republic. A production that’s seething with rage, leaving audiences breathless at how quickly violence reveals the fragility of democracy.” Julius Caesar is on at the Canberra Theatre from 12 – 20 October.
