Handmade loves Stationery

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved stationery. Crisp paper is tactile and beautiful, and there’s nothing quite like the smell of print (ever sniffed a magazine or a new book? go on, bet you have!) We’re lucky to have some talented designed selling cards, paper and stationery at Handmade, but we’d like to say hello to a designer whose range is making us happy. And she’s local to Canberra.

Annie Ng has a little business called Theoberry Stationery. Annie specialises in handmade paper and modern calligraphy, focusing on minimal designs which let the paper and their words speak for themselves. “I have been drawing since a very young age but only started pursuing my passion back in 2014, when I attended the Christmas Handmade Market under my previous business Cute Kotori, selling a range of kids greeting cards, prints and soft toys,” says Annie.

However, she went on to develop her skills further when, in 2016, she picked up a pen and started to play with calligraphy, falling in love with the art very quickly. Theoberry Stationery was created to take these skills into the wedding industry. And it’s been a fabulous success. Featuring on popular wedding blogs and magazines, she has made many couples very happy. “Wedding invitations are more than just a piece of paper. They give your guests the first glimpse of your story; the first impression of your special day. I love the idea of creating the type of invitation that is so special, that my couples and their guests will treasure for years to come.”

Annie’s inspiration comes from items with texture such as dried flowers, vintage love letters and European architecture. Her style is imperfect and ethereal – her motto is “Finding beauty in imperfection.” Most of her designs are printed or written on handmade paper that is sourced from talented paper makers around the world. As each sheet is handmade, there will be a variation in edges and surfaces which are highlighted rather than hidden by Annie’s words.

Annie will be taking custom orders at the Handmade Market on 29 & 30 June, so check out her range in advance and make sure you chat to her if you have an event or wedding coming up. You can choose from invites, save the date cards, place cards, wall banners, linen folios, wax seal stickers and more. In addition to the bespoke items, Theoberry will be selling beautiful linen products and wall banners, which feature some of her floral illustrations and short quotes written in modern calligraphy. There will also be paper products such as greeting cards and prints.

We asked Annie what her favourite thing about Canberra is and for her, it’s about family. “I love the fact that Canberra is not as busy other cities like Sydney and Melbourne. It is such a beautiful place to live in. I have two boys under the age of five and I can’t think of another place better to bring up my family.” And she’s also keen on the landscape, especially in Winter. “The best thing about Canberra winters are the beautiful photogenic landscapes it brings. Especially when the sun just starts to shine on the layer of frost on the ground. It is so beautiful and inspiring.”

Exciting for both us and Annie then, that she’ll be at Handmade this Winter. “I love that at each market we all come together to support handmade. It creates such a lovely atmosphere and a great sense of community. I look forward to meeting my lovely customers and other stallholders who love handmade products as much as I do.”
