The quirky images of Australian birds on Nichola Leeming’s ceramics are not painted. Her work has more in common with woodworking than painting. Entirely handmade and individually drawn, she uses knives and blades instead of paintbrushes to incise, inlay and insert coloured porcelain. Once fired the image is truly part of the piece, allowing the vessels to be hand sanded multiple times without degrading the image. The result is a unique piece with the luxurious feel of raw polished porcelain.
