Those of you who follow Handmade will know how passionate we are about our capital city. We have sweeping vistas, endless skies, architectural monuments, a thriving food scene, the world’s best coffee, balloons at dawn and music at dusk. All this combines to make Canberra quite a creative little place, which is why we are so enthusiastic about our local design scene and our regional produce. Designers are right here in nature, and inspired by the bush surrounds to create unique pieces. Producers have the perfect cool climate to grow wine, harvest olives and create delicious flavour combinations.
So here’s a celebration of some of the locals who will be at the Handmade Market on 20 & 21 October, showing off their little pieces of Canberra.
We are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to drinks producers in the region. Several local distilleries are not only making award winning spirits, but are doing so creatively, with style and with fierce loyalty to the region. Underground Spirits has just had a rebrand and won a handful of awards to make Canberra proud – head to the Handmade bar area to taste their spirits, cryofiltered to make them pure. But they’re not the only Canberra drinks sensations – just take a look around the drinks area in our Gourmet Food Hall and you’ll find everyone is connected to this region. We have a new winery arriving in October, from just up the road in Murrumbateman. Long Rail Gully Winery and Vineyard is 60 acre business producing cool climate wine varietals such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet, all hand picked, made and bottled here.
Design in its purest form combines functionality and beauty. Made From Good Deeds is a Canberra business that has mastered design, producing a range of minimalist stationery and homeware products that inspire positive living. Whether it’s a desk calendar that encourages good deeds or a simple wall hanger that displays your favourite prints, Made From Good Deeds is all about spreading good vibes, collaborations and simple living.
Cooma sister in law duo restore grace has a homewares collection that is stylish and on trend, consisting of cushions, patterned planter bags, organic cotton stitched rope bowls, intricate macramé hangers and tantalising candles. With all of your home requirements covered locally, your taste buds will also be thankful that they don’t have to travel too far to find Momos Taste of Tibet. Momos are mouthwatering traditional Tibetan dumplings. With three fillings to choose from and everything handmade fresh on site, Momos will be aiming to wow the Canberra crowd in October.
Kids in Canberra also have lots of choice when it comes to design, but also playfulness. A toy from Sweet Sista will become a family heirloom because of its individuality, but will also withstand the demands of being played with. With a new collection launched each season, the range also includes clothing for the little ones.
For the bigger ones, Canberra sensation, Zilpah Tart will be at the market again with her comfortable, feminine and unique garments, made locally, ensuring quality in an Australian made product. Designer Yumi Morrissey creates her own exclusive fabric prints for use in her collections. She uses photographs taken around the city to create beautiful, bright, unique prints which add movement to the designs, but also makes them Canberran through and through – and that’s definitely something to celebrate.
