We love to give at Handmade, and at Christmas time, when people in need feel it even more keenly, this is especially true. At the market on 6, 7 & 8 December, we have two charities that we hope you can help.
Our door charity is Send Hope Not Flowers. This is a Canberra-based charity which seeks to help women in developing countries to give birth safely. Every two minutes a woman will die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth somewhere in the world. 99% of these deaths take place in developing countries where women lack access to even the most basic maternal health care. While most mothers receive flowers when they have given birth to healthy babies in Australia, this charity asks what if the money spent on a bunch of flowers could go towards helping more women around the world give birth safely? Donations can be given through the website, because flowers die, and women giving birth should not. Please give a gold coin on your way into the market.
We are also hosting OzHarvest and GIVIT, who are working together this Christmas. It’s a tough time for so many Canberrans who are struggling to make ends meet. So these two wonderful organisations are hosting a Christmas Food Drive. Handmade visitors are invited to bring along a non-perishable food item which will be passed onto one of the hundreds of charities OzHarvest and GIVIT support across the Capital Region. Food items needed include:
- Christmas puddings
- Long life milk, long life custard
- Tea bags, instant coffee
- Pasta, rice, wholegrain cereal
- Canned fruit and veg, tuna, salmon
- Potato chips, biscuits (sweet and savoury)
Please bring your donations to the Conference Centre at EPIC, where the collection is taking place. Thank you.
