Buzzing with Ideas

Our online magazine is now available to read. Packed with news, listings and gorgeous images of what you’ll find at the October market, it’s a must-read. Click HERE to have a look. As a taster, here’s our focus on bee-inspired produce.

The humble bumble bee has been in the news a lot recently. Bees are amongst the most important creatures to humans on earth. These amazing insects pollinate over 80% of all flowering plants including 70 of the top 100 human food crops. One in three bites of food that we eat is derived from plants pollinated by bees. So it’s no surprise that keeping them healthy and abundant is a top priority for Australian producers.

Australian small bee keepers are passionate about their hives and their tiny inhabitants that do such good work. And Handmade is very proud to welcome some of them to each market with their delicious honey, beeswax candles and skincare products. Beeswax is a by-product of the honey making process that would be wasted if not used. With the damage that plastic is doing to the environment, beeswax wraps are a viable alternative. The warmth from your hands softens the wraps just enough to allow them to stick and the natural anti-bacterial properties of bees wax make this a hygienic and environmentally friendly way to keep food fresh. Head to Wrappa Reusable Food Wraps and Honey Bee Wraps for their pretty printed versions of these inventions.

If you want to taste the nectar itself, Honey B Whipped Infused Honey has blended local honey with essences of fruit and spice for a different take. Locals, Honey & Glow, not only produce honey from their own hives in its pure form, but they also use the beeswax to make balms, skincare and natural candles. Check out their full range at the October market. And there are bee illustrations and motifs on a number of Handmade designs a the next market. Ornamental bees by Broadcroft Design will make a buzz in the garden even when the originals aren’t around.

All of our bee related producers will be very happy to chat to you at the market about their processes and the origins of their products, so you’ll come away loving these buzzy creatures as much as they do.
