Zilpah Tart

Canberra local, Yumi Morrissey, has made a name for herself with exquisite and wearable fashion embellished with her photographs of our capital. Her label Zilpah Tart is a Handmade regular, and Yumi will be bringing a mix of favourite and new designs to the market on 18 & 19 March.

Tell us about your business
Zilpah tart is an Australian fashion label by designer Yumi Morrissey. I wanted to be a designer from a young age, at 6 years old I spent my  free time making outfits for my troll dolls. In 2007, I completed a Bachelor of Design (Fashion Design) at the Canberra Institute of Technology.  It was at this time my label was formed, though it would be many years before I would take the business full time.

The name Zilpah tart is personal as it was the name of my late Grandmother. After Zilpah passed, the family was sorting through her belongings when I found a 1940s brooch of a penny farthing.  This formed the basis for the logo and provides a personal memory and tribute to the late Zilpah Tart.

Zilpah Tart garments and accessories are designed for women who like to wear something unique, feminine and comfortable. Something that makes them feel special and stand out in a crowd. The designs are made locally from my studio in Canberra, ensuring quality in an Australian made product. I design my own exclusive fabric prints for use in my collections. I use photographs taken around Canberra to create beautiful, bright, unique prints which adds an exciting element to the designs. Zilpah Tart designs have been seen on a number of local politicians, including Gai Brodtmann and Katy Gallagher.

Why do you love the Handmade Market?
The Handmade Market is a beautifully curated market.  Well organised, friendly atmosphere, amazing online presence with social media. Because of this, they bring in a huge crowd, which provides great exposure and sales for my label.  My customers use this as a quarterly event to buy several months’ worth of dresses.  It’s also a great place to connect face to face with my customers.

What’s the best thing about Canberra?
Canberra is quite beautiful.  So many places to see and things to do.  It’s not crowded, and it’s really coming into its own now with a vibrant creative community and support for local business.

Can you describe your studio?
My studio is a converted double garage with plenty of space (that I’ve managed to fill!) You’ll find industrial sewing machines, never ending to-do lists, boxes upon boxes of beautiful fabrics, and sometimes a small person – my three year old keeping me company while I work.

Caroline Leevers is responsible for the Handmade brand, including the website, Handmade Style, the newsletter and the online magazine. When she's not hanging out with the lovely Handmade team, she runs Callie & Co Design, a Canberra graphic design studio that crafts brands for small businesses. Her favourite things about Canberra are the seasons (especially Autumn), the big sky, the coffee and the great events.
