Winter Holidays are here!

Canberra is throwing its worst at us in terms of temperatures, but wow, it’s beautiful! The sky is blue, the sunrises and sunsets are spectacular and the frost is delicate. While it’s tempting to spend the holidays holed up inside drinking hot chocolate and watching movies, Canberra has an enormous amount to offer at this time of year, so wrap up and take the children out for a while.

Only an hour or two down the road are Australia’s snowfields. Thredbo, Perisher and Selwyn are a short drive away, each with their own merits and each with abundant snow, open lifts and fun at the moment. Take the kids to Corin Forest for some tobogganing, or go for a week’s exhilaration on the red runs.

Skating At has taken residence in Gerema Place and the pop up rink will be open through until 16th July. With ice skating and rides on offer, this is an all-day event. Take the kids early, or skate after dark for a magical experience. For more details, visit the Skating At website.

The Australian War Memorial is hosting a number of school holiday activities. Hands on History allows children to try on uniforms and look at artefacts, while special family tours will tell the stories with children in mind. There are even art and craft activities. Visit the AWM website for more details.

The Canberra Theatre will be staging The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party from 12th to 15th July, an interactive performance with lots of fun and laughter. Head over to the Canberra Theatre site for ticket details.

Kids are encourages to take their bikes to the National Museum of Australia during the holidays to ride around and help build a bike-friendly city.  There are two sessions each day throughout the holidays. Tickets can be booked here.

Why not visit Canberra’s science museum at night? Tasty food, stargazing, winter crafts and science shows will be run from 5.30pm until 9pm during the holidays, so you can see a Canberra favourite through different eyes. Book at the Questacon website.

There are plenty of sports clinics and programmes going on throughout the nation’s capital and it’s not too late to book your children into a one day or one week course. The AIS is running a number of activities from soccer, tennis and AFL to intensive swimming camps. Head over to the AIS site to see more.

Still stuck? Most shopping malls are running school holiday activities and there are long lists of things to do in Canberra’s “Holiday Happenings” booklet, available from libraries around the region, and also as an app. Visit the website to find out more. Everything from cooking classes to clay workshops and horse riding to hip hop is listed.

We wish you a safe holiday period and hope that you and the kids have a lot of fun.
