If, like me, you want to be prepared for the onset of the cooler weather (ANZAC Day is in two weeks!), you’ll possibly be spending time during the school holidays sorting out winter wardrobes for you and the kids.
If I’m right, then I’ve caught you at a good time, because you might be able to help Vinnies. If items on your charity pile include beanies, socks, gloves, jumpers or jackets, we would like to suggest a way you can put them to good use.
During the June Market, Vinnies will be holding a blanket drive. Handmade has given them a stall at the market from which they would like to collect warm items that they can give to people who don’t have the benefits of a warm place to stay. And if you want to add blankets and sleeping bags to your pile, these would be very much appreciated, along with hygiene packs (tooth brush, paste, soaps, deodorants etc.)
The St Vincent de Paul Society is committed to actively and passionately speaking out against the causes of poverty and inequality. The Canberra Night Patrol is staffed by about 280 volunteers, serving up to 1000 homeless and at-risk people a month with light refreshments, and donating clothing and hygiene packs, along with blankets, jackets, beanies and scarves during the bitter Canberra Winter. They provide a snack and a listening ear. Their blanket drive seeks to collect warm items for Canberra’s homeless, but also to raise awareness.
Usually, when you attend the market, we have a hamper draw. Many of our designers contribute beautiful items, adding up to around $300 in value, which one lucky winner gets to claim just for filling out a card. To encourage the greatest number of donations this time, we will only be running the hamper giveaway for people who donate items to the Vinnies stall. For every item you donate, you will have one entry into the draw, so the more you donate, the more chance you have of winning! Get collecting and we’ll see you with your warm things in June!
