Twice Designs is a Handmade regular that draws crowds of shoppers with its unique but on-trend artwork that perfectly blends vintage and contemporary styling. Chat to them about each picture and they’ll be able to tell you the story behind it and the provenance of each element. We asked Sarah Barnett our five questions to find out more.
- What is your business all about?
Twice Designs is about creating items that bring joy. It’s a hybrid being – part vintage, part modern. The vintage element recontextualises items of incidental beauty – advertisements, maps, toys and game pieces – into affordable art pieces. The modern side draws inspiration from vintage sensibilities and style, and modern environmentally-conscious printing techniques (vegetable inks, recycled paper stock) to create stationery and posters.
I’m a former historian who is passionate about provenance, and a freelance writer who believes in the power of second chances and the importance of words. There is deliberate whimsy and humour and work in twice designs creations. I love what I make and I want my customers to as well.
- What advice would you give to designers coming to Handmade for the first time?
Celebrate! It’s a fantastic market to be part of. Bring spending money because you can get Christmas AND next year’s present sorted in one hit. Get to know fellow stallholders because it’s such a treat to spend time with such lovely creative types. Don’t run off on Saturday afternoon but stay back and have a drink and a chat. And of course load up with plenty of stock and plan a gorgeous stall.
- What’s the best thing about Handmade?
For a maker of paper-based products, being inside is wonderful. For a handmade-veteran it’s so lovely to have returning and regular customers. For an aesthetically sensitive person it’s a treat to be surrounded by so many brilliant artists, designers and makers. But the very best thing isn’t a thing. It’s lovely Julie and the whole Handmade team who really value and appreciate all their stallholders and make us feel special!
- What’s new for the Christmas Market?
Well Christmas cards, of course! I also have a new selection of posters which reflect my love of books, education and music. And, as always, plenty of new old things that I have carefully sourced and prepared for this special market.
- What will Santa be bringing you this year?
I love Christmas. And this year I’ll be taking time to reflect and rejoice and read plenty of books. Given my proclivities I’m usually given piles of books and quite possibly a bottle or two of dessert wine.
Rest, reflection, books and wine sound perfect! We’ll be with you in spirit Sarah. See you at the market!
