This Weekend in Canberra

We’d much rather you stayed at EPIC all weekend long, but Canberra, as usual, is buzzing with activity this long weekend. Once you have had your fill of shopping, eating and taking in the unique Handmade atmosphere, why not have a look around our beautiful city and enjoy the Winter sunshine that’s predicted?

Only 45 minutes out of town, this weekend marks the beginning of the snow season at Corin Forest. There’s plenty of artificial snow there, so take the kids tobogganing or indulge in some skiing or snowboarding. The lodge has a roaring fire and hot chocolate and there are plenty of activities to mark the start of the season. Check out the options on their website.

Handmade’s gourmet food hall attracts local foodies, but once you’ve completed your shopping and eating experience, why not head off to one of the Canberra Truffle Festival events? With hunts at local farms and truffle-based menus at local eateries such as Mount Majura Vineyard and Bentspoke Brewery, there’s something truffle-related for everyone. Visit their website for event details.

Cycling aficionados might like to visit ‘Freewheeling,’ an exhibition that covers 140 years of cycling in Australia. With famous bikes on display, including those belonging to Cadel Evans and Caroline Buchanan, along with vintage examples, this exhibition is on at the National Museum of Australia.

Canberra is also celebrating World Gin Day on Saturday! Not only will we have some of Canberra’s best gin for you to sample at the market, but Muse in Canberra’s East Hotel will be hosting a special dinner, with four courses, paired with exclusive gin cocktails. There are beautiful gin cocktails to be sampled all over the city in bars such as Black Market and Monster in New Acton and Molly on London Circuit.

And for those of you visiting from interstate, there are still some beautiful Autumn leaves on Canberra’s trees. Catch the last ones before they fall, and view the city from above at the Mount Ainslie or Red Hill lookouts.

As usual, there are too many good eateries to mention. However, you could do worse than Breakfast at Barrio and Lunch at Rye in Braddon, Wine at Bar Rochford in the Melbourne Building and Dinner at Chairman & Yip in Barton.

Caroline Leevers is responsible for the Handmade brand, including the website, Handmade Style, the newsletter and the online magazine. When she's not hanging out with the lovely Handmade team, she runs Callie & Co Design, a Canberra graphic design studio that crafts brands for small businesses. Her favourite things about Canberra are the seasons (especially Autumn), the big sky, the coffee and the great events.
