The CBR Foodies

Handmade’s gourmet food hall is an assault on the senses. Hundreds of beautiful displays of the region’s best produce are a feast for the eyes. Team this with the sound of easy chat, live music and stallholders showing off their produce and the aroma of fresh coffee and delicious cooking and you start to get the feel of Canberra’s biggest indoor food market. Not forgetting your tastebuds, which will struggle to keep up with all of the flavours you can capture.

Stay an hour for a quick coffee and cake before setting off to shop or stay the day, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks on offer. With plenty of seating, it’s a great place to meet your friends, sample the produce and relax for a street food meal or a Canberra cocktail. We’re not sure we can think of a better way to spend your weekend on 16 & 17 September.

And the best of it is that the majority of our producers and street food vendors run their businesses here in Canberra. Here’s a list and review of the locals that you will find at Handmade in September.

Barbell Biltong and Stockman Sticks will both be bringing their high protein , natural meat snacks, carefully prepared right here in the Canberra region. Sauces, chutneys and jams will be available from Black Horse Fine Foods and Thirst Thai. Procure your olive oil from Sutton Forest Olives and your fragrant garlic from Garlicious Grown to give flavour to your menu. Your tea break is taken care of by specialists Endeavour Tea and Wild Yunnan Tea and your supply of chocolate can be met by locals, Enigma and Jasper + Myrtle. The popcorn from Yass producer, Cracking Corn, needs to be tried, as does the now world famous bacon from Pialligo Smokehouse. Local busy bees, Honey & Glow will be there with the nectar and if your sweet tooth isn’t satisfied, take home a beautiful cookie from Rosebery Street Bakehouse, a biscuit from Babic Biscuiteers or a filled brownie from The Hungry Brown Cow.

Did we say sweet tooth? Veganarchy will be providing the vegan goodness with a wide selection of baked treats, as will the Newborn Intensive Care Foundation‘s Baked for Babies stall. Raising much needed funds, these wonderful volunteers will be selling home baked goods from a number of Canberra bakers. If doughnuts are your thing, Bombolini will be serving their iconic Canberra treats, or head to Krofne, where they are freshly made in front of your eyes. Another Canberra institution, Cannoli Brothers, is not to be missed.

Locally prepared organic drinks from Gift of Our Earth will refresh, as will lemonades and juices from Krave, while cold brew coffee from Bellerophon will pick you up. Quarry Hill Wines will be serving up their cold climate goodness and if you’re in the mood for gin, head to The Canberra Distillery for a bottle or cocktail. If vodka is your preferred drink, Underground Spirits will gladly help.

For your coffee fix, head to Art Of Espresso for locally roasted coffee and great music. Or enjoy coffee and cake at My Sweet Alice’s vintage caravan.

Handmade Canberra’s Street Food is becoming legendary. Local and international flavours are everywhere you turn, so be sure to spend long enough to try at least one offering.

Food from the Philippines will be served by Kusina and from India by Tikka Stand. If you need a Greek fix, Yiannos has what you’re looking for, while its European neighbour, The Italian Traveller will be serving delicious soup in its trademark hollowed out loaves. For a Latin experience, Canberra favourites, Mr Papa, will be available with their latest Peruvian concoctions, or try La Empanada. Aussie pasties and sausage rolls are given the gourmet (and mouthwatering) twist by Uncle Juan’s Bakehouse, and for potato heaven, try Kurbside Kitchen‘s Potato on a stick or Scotts jacket potatoes. If you’re a meat fan, slow cooked barbecue meat from Smokey G’s BBQ Joint is sure to satisfy.

And don’t forget, all of these street food sellers are local!
