The bold and the colourful
Little Flexi is a family business created by Mikala Sedgwick and her partner Pete, and is run out of their studio in Canberra. The combination of Mikala’s fashion design background and Pete’s Graphic Design experience has produced patterned children’s clothes that are both practical and eye catching.
They decided to launch the brand after struggling to find baby clothes for their son, Felix, that were bold, colourful, and not too kiddy. Although there are plenty of amazing local kids brands that they love, they saw a small gap in the market and decided to give it a go.
Says Mikala, “the inspiration for our designs comes from our love of bold, vibrant colours and patterns and what we felt was currently lacking in kids apparel and swaddle blanket designs. Little Flexi also happens to be our son’s nickname. Our design philosophy is to produce unique pieces that allow kids to express their own individuality, style and personality. Our mantra is to produce bold designs for bold little humans”.
All of Little Flexi’s apparel is designed and screen printed in Canberra using eco friendly dyes. Garments are ethically and environmentally sourced, super soft and different. “We create unisex designs and enjoy creating products that speak to parents looking for something different with playful use of colour and considered designs.”
After receiving feedback, the pair are now working on some new colour way options, with some slightly more feminine designs and have big plans for the rest of the year. Apart from having their first stall at the Handmade Christmas Market, they will be featured in Canberra children’s store Tip You’re It in Lonsdale St, as part of their pop up feature program.
“We have heard wonderful things about the Handmade markets from other previous stall holders and we like that the markets support local small business. We have also checked out the Handmade Shop and we love the product selection. We’re super excited to be involved in the December markets”.
High on Mikala’s list of favourite things about Canberra is the green lushness and space. She’s a fan of Double Shot and Locale Pizzeria, both in Deakin. “I wander down most days for a hot chocolate and babycino at Double Shot. The staff are always super friendly and give Felix extra marshmallows. We love sitting outside in their garden table area. It’s lovely to have a funky kid friendly cafe that is so close to home”. She also loves making the trip into Braddon and dropping by Chasing Mr Morris for a hot chocolate and yummy donut.
Most of their Canberra haunts are child-related, including the National Arboretum, walks around the lake and checking out Paperchain Bookstore in Manuka where “they have the best design book section.” They also enjoy taking Felix to Boundless Park, Questacon, the Woden skatepark or the Telopea Park mini ramp. With all that activity, we can’t wait to see the energy they bring to Handmade.
Little Flexi are giving away a voucher to spend at the market to the value of $50! Head over to our Facebook page for details.
