Usually, I have the job of putting together blog posts from snippets of information given to me by businesses and designers, by asking questions, listening to the answers and taking an angle on the story. I love working this way, but sometimes I receive an honest and open email with just the right amount of information, in a beautifully written way, and in this case, I’d just like to publish it as it is.
Art of Espresso is one of our coffee providers for Handmade in September and with the sort of passion that’s evident in this piece, I’m guessing the coffee is going to be amazing. Here it is.
Dear Handmade Canberra
AOE was established in 1999 as a mobile coffee cart business and has since gone on to become one of regional NSW’s pioneering coffee roasting businesses with multi award winning coffees nationally and internationally. Trained in Turin Italy, AOE learnt the art of espresso via its commitment to the art, technique and traditions of preparing and serving espresso coffee. Having returned from Italy with the knowledge and passion for quality espresso, Adrian and Gabrielle Capra began roasting coffee on their property “Marree” in Greenethorpe, NSW. Since then AOE has gone on to become a direct trade coffee merchant importing top end earth friendly coffees from countries as diverse as India, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Vanuatu and also Australia.
We pride ourselves on the relationships formed with the coffee farmers and their workers. In fact AOE is currently funding the rebuilding of a primary school in India on the Elephant Hills coffee plantation!! We trade in 100% organic arabica coffee beans approved by NAASA and the USDA organic bodies and some of our coffees are also Fairtrade certified. AOE also pioneered NSW’s first regional AASCA approved barista school located in Young NSW.
The inspiration happened back in 1996 when Adrian married Young local girl Gabrielle. We both left the big smoke of Sydney for a tree change. The only catch was a good coffee was rare back in those days so we decided to change the perception of quality coffee in the bush. We did this via opening our first cafe and it was there that our coffee lifestyle changed forever… 20 years later with our own brand of coffee, 3 children and several mobile coffee cart franchises, AOE roasts in excess of 30 tons of coffee annually and currently supplies cafés and restaurants to businesses in Sydney, South Coast, regional NSW and surrounds.
The solid relationships formed over the years from third world coffee farmers, local businesses, our very own AOE team and our much valued customer is the core emphasis of our inspiration!!
What we love about Canberra and its people is the strong coffee culture which has exploded in the last 2 to 5 years! We are all becoming very picky with the quality of coffee served and I personally believe Canberra is up there with Melbourne when it comes to espresso coffee and the groovy cafe scene. I also love that Canberra is only an hour and half away from Young which makes a day trip very doable.
Overall, the food scene is awesome, the market scene is cool, we get to see some amazing Australian Indie live music and Canberra is also the home of one of my personal favourite record shops!!
I feel truly privileged to be able to share my coffee and passion for coffee at The Handmade Markets in September and sincerely look forward to seeing you all there.
My deepest thanks and respect
Adrian Capra, Art of Espresso
