Not So Foolish

Foolhouse is “a world of curios for any room or reason.” Run by designer, Sarah Lamond, the whimsy of the products is complemented by their vintage style. Foolhouse’s products are constantly evolving and new ideas will be present at the Handmade Market this weekend – 10 & 11 December at EPIC. As Sarah is returning to Handmade, we asked her our five questions.

  1. What is your business all about?

Foolhouse is about making the ordinary a little less ordinary. Re-imagining vintage collectibles and making vessels for the aiding and abetting of the hiding of secrets! It is about a cottage industry built with busy hands and a busy mind, a handcrafted-one that supports a hand-crafted life.

  1. What advice would you give to designers coming to Handmade for the first time?

Take the time to stop and smell the donuts! No doubt you have been working hard for weeks in the lead up to the market, you are exhausted and many, like us have had to pack the car to the rafters, ship the kids off and drive hours to get there, and then you have to put the whole jigsaw puzzle together (otherwise known as your stand) and fill it with perfectly made and placed goodies. Then suddenly all these lovely customers bombard you, and they will bombard you…only in a good way as there are so many of them (thank you Handmade Canberra!)…and you just have to STOP and force yourself  to look around at all the colour and crazy creative chaos and remember that this is why you are here and you made it! Literally. Now go have some fun! Show and Tell time!

  1. What’s the best thing about Handmade?

Meeting fellow stall-holders who are like-minded creative people, who actually DO hand craft their products. Learning from them and the way they do things and hearing their experiences in the online and market arena. Meeting the Canberra audience who seem to have such an infectious passion for handmade and enjoying the atmosphere as it’s so relaxed and always festive even when it’s not Christmas! Plus it’s an easy bump-in and out (if there is such a thing!)

  1. What’s new for the Christmas Market?

Foolhouse will have their signature products at Handmade Canberra – their Treasure Boxes and their coveted Vintage Secret Book Safes. Within these categories there will be new illustrations and engravings and a whole library of precious keepsakes for your secrets plus some limited edition Book Sculptures. Plus we’re bringing with us a batch of our 2016 Super Stars for everyone’s Christmas decorating and limited edition plywood pennants for your wall!

  1. What will Santa be bringing you this year?

I’m definitely hinting hard for a new cake mixer. I love baking and my current one packed it in making the inaugural Christmas Pudding! I knew I should have honoured Nanny’s family recipe and mixed it with my bare hands!

It’s almost time for that show & tell, Sarah. We can’t wait to see your stall at the weekend. Safe travels!
