Caitlin Perkins has a big menagerie of animals and toys that she would like to share with us for the first time at the Handmade Market, 10 & 11 September (10am – 4pm). All my menagerie toys are hand-stitched with care from merino wool felt, so you’re definitely going to want them in your menagerie as well. We asked Caitlin our new designer questions:
1. What is your business all about?
my menagerie is a menagerie of handmade felt toys, cushions and nursery products. Each product is hand-stitched and made from lovely merino wool felt by me in my Blue Mountains studio. Many of the toys are inspired by my childhood – growing up on a small farm in the Tasmanian bush, where my family raised orphaned pet wombats who loved munching on carrots, where boisterous guinea fowls ran amuck and wild owls hooted in nearby trees at night. my menagerie’s range of toys and cushions can be more ornamental in a nursery or cuddled to bits by babies and children.
2. What made you apply to Handmade?
It seems like the perfect market to do in Canberra, celebrating handmade, unique, quality products and supporting small, creative businesses. Being based in the Blue Mountains, I tend to do markets in Sydney and its surrounds. So I am excited to venture further afield to share my creations with those in Canberra who love and support local and handmade.
3. Sum up your business in THREE words.
Understated, hand-stitched toys.
We can think of many people, big and small, who would like to cuddle these toys to bits. Thanks for sharing with us Caitlin, and we can’t wait to meet you in person!
