Mum Made It began one afternoon when two sisters came up with a great idea over coffee. Erin and Anna, both Canberra locals, were discussing how difficult it was to find beautiful gifts for parents that were practical and individual. Their searches through department stores had revealed that there was a gap in the market, and so they decided that they would create the kind of useful unique items that they couldn’t find. Mum Made It was born.
After “months of procrastination and debates over a business name”, they launched in February 2013. Time has shown that their success lies in limited editions with small amounts of each fabric being used to create exclusivity. Erin says “As Mum Made It has developed as a brand, it is very humbling for us when we have return clientèle shop with us because they were so happy with their previous purchase and are now shopping for gifts or themselves.”
The product range currently includes bamboo bibs, bandana bibs, nappy wallets, change mats, blankets, dummy/toy clips, and hair accessories, all made with high quality fabrics and materials that have proven to stand the test of time, even with daily use and regular machine washing!
After several requests following the last Handmade Market, the girls are bringing their new unisex Christmas bamboo bib to the December market so they are always adapting to their audience. This is their first year participating in the Handmade Market and they love it. “It is so well organised, the new venue has allowed for such a diverse range of handmade products to be showcased by local and interstate businesses. We thoroughly enjoy the social aspect of the weekend with both fellow stall holders and customers alike. We particularly love it when we have an expectant mum shop with us and then at the following market we get to meet her bub…its a tough job…”
Being Canberra locals, they are in on the badly kept secret that Canberra is awesome. “We both love living in Canberra purely for the ease of life. Since having our children we have discovered Canberra is such a wonderful place to raise a family, and offers so much for all age groups and interests. It has been exciting to see the café and restaurant scene expand in recent years and is a credit to the region.”
It looks like Mum’s definitely made it in Canberra.
