If you’ve ever been to Asia or South America, you’ll have seen the stalls on every corner selling sugar cane juice. Contrary to its name, sugar cane juice is incredibly good for you. It is packed with antioxidants, low GI and full of vitamins and minerals, especially when fresh. On countless Asian trips, the team behind Jasper + Myrtle Chocolates enjoyed this delicious green nectar and the idea of bringing it to Canberra became a reality earlier this year with the purchase of a press.
This December, we will be welcoming Ethel & Ah Loy to the Handmade Market for the first time. Named after Peter’s favourite aunt and Li Peng’s favourite uncle, the pair have taken on personalities of their own, as a couple of quirky best friends who are very different from each other (he loves Elvis and restores Vespas, she is a well-travelled retiree with friends in high places) but share a love of cold pressed sugar cane juice.
We asked Peter our questions so he could tell us more.
Ethel and Ah Loy’s sugar cane juice initiative is about bringing the well known pleasure and health benefits of freshly pressed cane juice to Canberra. Cane juice is well known across Asia, South America and the tropics generally. Now it is Canberra’s turn.
Handmade Markets are Canberra’s premier market with huge crowds and widely diverse products. First time designers need to embrace the friendly high energy atmosphere, relax and interact with the crowd to present their product in the best light possible.
The best thing about handmade is the friendship and support between the stall operators and organising team.
I am sure Santa has had a big year and is too busy to be getting me much this time. I will be happy for something small like a sleep in, a hug and keys to a Porsche!
