Marching on

It’s a great feeling isn’t it? When someone asks you where you got those fabulous earrings or comments on the beautiful vase that has recently appeared on your shelf. Especially when you can say that they came from Handmade and are one of a kind. We’re guessing that those new earrings are still attracting comments and you’re still enjoying wearing them, but can you believe you’ve had them for almost a month now, and that it’s only a couple of months until the next market opens its doors!

We loved welcoming all of you design aficionados to EPIC in March. We always enjoy watching reactions to new products, seeing so many of you laden with bags from the best Australian designers and observing the contented sighs of first tastes in the food hall. In fact, some of your biggest reactions came from the gourmet food hall. We had more food vans than ever in March, from delicious burgers and sausages through to mouthwatering waffles and crêpes with creamy coffees and much needed fruit drinks to cool you down on what turned out to be an unseasonably hot weekend.

Food March

Canberra definitely lived up to its new foodie reputation, as we noticed crowds of you tasting beautiful local produce with a view to stocking your larders with flavours to enhance your cooking. Spices, garlic, vinegar and an Aladdin’s cave of sauces and chutneys were all lovingly placed in your bags. Cakes and cookies were taken home for tea and guilty pleasures in the form of wine and chocolate were among the most popular purchases.

The home lovers among you sought out the exclusive wares of our designers, who had spent months working with a variety of materials to present you with unique pieces. Chopping boards and knives for the kitchen, sat alongside ceramics that would grace any table. Textiles in the form of linens and cushions to soften the edges were placed in bags with candles and flowers for ambience. And there was plenty of art for your walls too, with Handmade’s artists flattered by your interest and only too happy to chat about their processes.

Children’s clothing, toys and homewares drew in the crowds as usual, with many of you taking treats home for your beloved furry friends as well.

Fashion also won the day again, with thousands of purchases from our clever stable of clothing, jewellery and accessories designers. Whether as gifts or special treats for yourselves, you spent a lot of time browsing for cloth and trinkets – and we’re so glad you found that pair of earrings. We love them! Where did you find them?!

The next Handmade Market is fast approaching – Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of June – put the dates in your diaries, because they promise to be just as beautiful, tasty and full of unique designer finds. See you there!
