Are you looking for custom-made and exquisite craftsmanship in your Christmas gift? Sarah van Oosterom designs, measures, cuts and stitches every one of her beautiful leather bags by hand, with up to sixteen handmade processes in every piece. Based in Melbourne, Sarah is looking forward to her Canberra trip to the Handmade Market, 10 & 11 December. We asked her our five questions.
- What is your business all about?
I started as an artist graduating from RMIT and soon found leather as my new favourite medium. My work incorporates sculptural yet functional designs, using the most exquisite vegetable tanned leathers. Each piece is finely crafted using the best quality parts including solid brass and cotton canvas. My work is traditional leather crafting with feminine designs and colours.
- What advice would you give to designers coming to Handmade for the first time?
Don’t stress too much! Just try to be well stocked, smile and believe in yourself.
- What’s the best thing about Handmade?
It’s great to be a part of a market that is solely based around Australian made designs, everyone is a passionate maker and you know that it’s an important community to support as it supports local Australian industry and jobs.
- What’s new for the Christmas Market?
I have some great new colours and a brand new line of 100% vegetable tanned leathers straight from the tannery in Italy.
- What will Santa be bringing you this year?
Hopefully some handcrafted silver jewellery, it’s my favourite gift!
Thanks Sarah – we think leather bags might be our favourite gift, so we hope you’ll be bringing lots with you!
