Kate Johansson will be making her way to Handmade on 10 & 11 June from her base in Melbourne for the first time. She will be bringing a van full of health with her, in the form of breakfast and salad toppers packed with nutrients, and protein pancake mixes that will take the guilt away from weekend breakfast. We asked her some questions about Koja.

What made you apply to Handmade?
Last Winter I was at an outdoor farmers market, it was raining and less than 10 degrees. These mornings at farmers markets are definitely character building! It’s usually a good chance to chat to other stallholders because there are very few customers (everyone’s at home in the warmth and staying dry!) I was chatting to my neighbour and he recommended Handmade Canberra as a great indoor market, worth the road trip from Melbourne for it! So here I am.
What are you looking forward to most about your trip?
I’m coming up on my own, and it’s about a 7 hour drive from Melbourne so I’m looking forward to being able to choose the music and podcasts all the way!
What’s the best way to keep warm in Winter?
Hot tea. I often carry a thermos of herbal tea with me. A good workout. Often in winter I find myself feeling less motivated to get up and go to the gym or out for a jog, but it’s the best way to get warmed up and stay warm for hours.
A balanced breakfast with wholefood carbohydrates, healthy fats and a dose of protein. My favourite is the quinoa porridge recipe here topped with a spoon of greek yoghurt, fresh berries, and 2 tablespoons of KOJA, yum!
Here’s the recipe for our Quinoa Porridge, a winter essential, topped with KOJA of course.
- 1/4 Cup Quinoa flakes
- 1/4 Cup Buckwheat (flakes/cream of buckwheat)
- 2 Cups Water (or 2 cups of plant based milk of your choice)
- Pinch of Salt
- 1tbs Chia Seeds
- Handful of fresh berries
- KOJA Almond & Berry
- Cook the quinoa, buckwheat, water and salt together until the porridge begins to soften and cook through. This should only take a few moments.
- Stir through chia seeds and top with berries, and KOJA Almond & Berry Breakfast Topper
- Add honey, rice malt syrup or coconut sugar for sweetness if you like.
Best served warm and eaten slowly.
