Lynette Swift was a town planner before the “life’s too short” bug took over, but textiles had always been her passion and she has now embraced the textile life with the mission to never compromise on quality.
An idyllic childhood touring the world, observing its beauty and experiencing other cultures moulded her into the artisan she is today, working with the rich colours and textures inspired by nature.
It is the artisan in Lynette that has led her to the handmade life in which craftsmanship is of paramount importance. A member of the Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild of NSW (amongst other organisations), she is a weaving tutor and demonstrates her skills at craft shows, which draws the crowds. She sees passing on textile skills to the next generation as vital in ensuring this handmade craft won’t be lost.
Her own natural yarns and fibres, and those of carefully selected suppliers, are used to make hats and accessories in both classical and modern styles. Felt knitted hats and bags, felted accessories, knitted, crochet and woven accessories and fibre art make up the By Lynette range, all of which proudly display the Australian Made logo.
Not content with making and showing, Lynette also sells supplies for weaving, spinning and textile crafts, so hers is a truly holistic approach.
Lynette draws inspiration from the other like-minded creative people she meets and shares ideas with at the Handmade Market. Also a favourite at Shop Handmade, By Lynette’s hats are loved by young and old alike and she is happy to share the love.
“There is so much to love about Canberra,” says Lynette, citing the fresh air and radiant colours of the Autumn trees as favourite features.
“After the Handmade Market we always add an extra day as a special treat to unwind and take in the ambience of Canberra and its surrounds. First stop is always Shop Handmade to purchase a couple of little extra surprises for my grand kids or even for myself.” The Civic Carousel brings back many childhood memories and Lynette couldn’t resist a ride last Christmas in the midst of the amazing light displays. And Lynette’s favourite cafés include The Cupping Room for brunch and the Lonsdale Street Roasters for waffles.
