Handy Tips for Attending the Autumn Handmade Market
With approximate crowds of 20,000+ expected to attend the Autumn Handmade Market event THIS weekend, it’s going to be EPIC [pun fully intended]!
Handmade enthusiasts flock from all over Australia to revel in the amazing talent of our nation’s independent designers. Artists, designers, stylists, craftspeople and gourmets all at one convenient destination – Budawang Building and the adjacent pavillion, Exhibition Park in Canberra [EPIC]. A unique event to connect the makers of beautiful things to people who appreciate quality, handcrafted and locally designed items.
Come along and support your Australian art and design community. 220 stalls, two pavilions, two days of shopping – THIS Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm – we promise there is plenty of handmade goodness for all.
Our tips for the most stress-free, enjoyable Handmade Market experience:
Parking – There will be plenty of it… 3,000 or so spots! Right outside the Budawang Building, throughout the Exhibition Park site, and on Flemington Road. Rather catch a bus? There are two bus stops adjacent to EPIC; one on the Federal Highway, one on Flemington Road.
Money – Many of our designers have eftpos facilities to take payment, but there are smaller indie and emerging designers that may not, so we recommend you bring along some cash. There are two ATMs on site.
Time – Not a fan of too much hustle and bustle? Have a sleep in, or go out for brunch, then swing by the market in the afternoon. The Handmade Market closes at 4pm, both Saturday and Sunday.
Food – Coffee bars, food vans, boutique beers and wines by the glass will provide all the sustenance you need to shop until you drop in our food hall packed with locally grown gourmet goodies.
Plan – If you have come to visit particular designers, or maybe you are on a strict time limit. There is a list/map of stalls at the entry. Or seek out our friendly ‘Handmade Helpers’ donned in aprons or fluoro pink vests, for directions.
What else is on – The Capital Region Farmers Market is held 7:30 – 11:30am on Saturday, also at Exhibition Park in Canberra. A community project run by the Rotary Club of Hall, well worth a look pre-Handmade Market.
The March Handmade Market falls quite conveniently on the Canberra Day long weekend. The public holiday commemorates the founding of Australia’s National Capital and is cheerful cause to celebrate our beautiful bushland city. ‘The Can’ will be in full festival mode, delivering many exciting major events for both community and visitors to delight in. There is plenty of family fun scheduled, fine dining, tours, performances & visual spectacles.
Please take the time on your way in to the Handmade Market to say “hello” to the lovely volunteers from Menslink. Donations supporting this essential and wonderful organisation would be most appreciated!
