Gifts in Silver

Alex Stone will again be at the Handmade Market on 10 & 11 December, with her delicate and eye-catching displays of silver jewellery. No stranger to the ways of the markets, we asked her our five questions.

  1. What is your business all about?
Alex Stone Jewellery is all about making unique handmade silver jewellery, for woman and girls, but at affordable prices. In a very competitive market, I try to avoid the latest trends to ensure that my customers get the chance to buy designs that are not frequently available from most designers.
  2. What advice would you give to designers coming to Handmade for the first time?
I have been trading at markets for the past 15 years with my jewellery, and Handmade is one of my favourites. My advice to first time stall holders at Handmade is to enjoy yourself. Handmade has a great atmosphere, which I believe is made by the community of stallholders. Get to know your neighbour and share your stories. You get to learn a lot that way. Get to know your customers too. I have made many friendships at Handmade, not only from stallholders, but from customers too.
  3. What’s the best thing about Handmade?
There are many things I love about Handmade, how its run, who it’s run by and the amazing line up of Australian handmade designers. The best thing for me though, is that it doesn’t feel like going to work. Don’t get me wrong, it takes a lot of preparation and hard work, and I always feel I need a week to recover, but because it is so well organised and the other stallholders are so friendly, it is a time I always look forward to and enjoy.
  4. What’s new for the Christmas Market?
I am very excited to be bringing with me to the Christmas Market a new Sports line. This is a collection that will be available for both men and woman, boys and girls. Sport is such a huge part of many people’s lives (I can speak from experience with 3 very sporty sons, and a sporty husband). I have designed a new collection that is forever growing with customers’ requests, from soccer to footy, showjumping, netball and martial arts. These designs, hand cut out of recycled sterling silver, will be available as charms, necklaces and key rings. If there is a way the customer would like to wear it, I will try to accommodate them.
  5. What will Santa be bringing you this year?
Santa is very good at surprising me with gifts, so I have absolutely no idea what he will be bringing this year. What I do know though is that there is no school, no work, and no sport, just family fun time. That is the best gift I get every year.

Thank for sharing Alex, and we can’t wait to see your new sports line – already on our gift lists for the sports fanatics in our lives!
