Fuelling the Adventure

Barbell Biltong is owned by brothers from South Africa with a passion for health, movement and the outdoors. Having lived in Australia for the last ten years, they are veterans of the Australian bush, but originally struggled to find a convenient source of protein to fuel their adventures so decided to produce their own.

Barbell Biltong is made from Australian grass fed beef, marinated, spiced and hung to dry for ten days. It contains no sugar and preservatives like many of the meat snacks on the market. 100% paleo, this biltong is healthy and packed with protein for athletes, adventurers and health enthusiasts.

 

Biltong is a traditional South African food, where large beef steaks are marinated in vinegar, spiced and then hung to air dry in a controlled environment at ambient temperatures. No heat is used to cook the meat during this process and so the finished product contains all the natural health benefits of raw beef.

 

As first-timers to the Handmade Market on 10 & 11 September (10am-4pm) we asked them our three questions:

1. What is your business all about?
Barbell Biltong serves to provide athletes and adventurers with a convenient and healthy real food. Our biltong is made entirely from pasture fed beef which contain high quantities of omega-3 essential fatty acids. We at Barbell Biltong also believe strongly in supporting sustainable farming for the benefit of animal welfare and the environment. We pride our biltong on containing no added sugars or preservatives. It is made for health focused people mindful of what they consume.

2. What made you apply to Handmade?
Something we love about the Handmade Market is how they encapsulate so much of the creativity that takes place in Canberra. We have really been able to express ourselves creatively whilst growing this business and think we’ll fit right in.

3. Sum up your business in THREE words

The boys have also given us a recipe for a quick lunch with biltong as the key ingredient, along with sweet potato and avocado:
1. Microwave that damn sweet potato! 
2. Cut yourself an avocado
3. Lay down a handful of barbell biltong 
4. Devour!
