Rowan Shaw is always on hand at the Handmade Market with a smile and perfect sense of humour. And her jewellery is lovely too! Frank Ideas jewellery is sculptural, tactile, bold, rebellious and, in Rowan’s words “frankly unpredictable.” She specialises in items that are light and easy to wear, inspired by architecture and landscape, and evolved from a love of texture, colour and form.
She’ll be back at Handmade on 10 & 11 September, 10am until 4pm, so we asked her our five questions:
1. What is your business all about?
Bold design and being noticed.
2. What advice would you give to first time stall holders at Handmade?
Bring as much stock as you can.
Prepare to be very busy
Try to be set up 15 minutes before opening time (customers always arrive early)
If you are by yourself hire “helping hands”- otherwise your bladder will burst and you could die from lack of caffeine and nutrition.
Be prepared to chat – customers at Handmade Canberra are friendly and love to talk.
Don’t underprice yourself – most of these shoppers appreciate well crafted, handmade and quality.
3. What’s the best thing about Handmade?
Apart from the face book group which is FABULOUS for sharing, advice, snark and hysteria it’s the organisers, staff and other stall holders…this is a community – enjoy it and count yourself incredibly lucky to be a part of it. Oh, and the Saturday drinks are a great way to unwind, debrief and meet other like minded, creative people.
Nearly forgot – Canberrans really feel they “own” this market – they are genuinely pleased and appreciative that you are here…and they like to shop.
4. What’s new for the next market?
Bold spring colours, some new chunky bead designs, bangles, earrings and rings.
5. Sum up your business in THREE words.
Frankly unpredictable jewellery…
Thanks Rowan – we can’t wait to catch up with you again.
