Emby Love

It may be getting cold out there, but the skies are still the brightest blue most days, and a good walk followed by a scrumptious picnic is a great day out. What better way to protect yourself from the cold hard ground than an Emby Love picnic blanket? Canberran, Kate Daly, is bringing her beautiful and practical range of blankets to the market on 10 & 11 June and we asked her some questions about her business.

Tell us about your business

At Emby Love, I create modern, family sized (175cm x 135cm) picnic blankets. All picnic blankets are triple-layered, featuring a comfortable and durable 100% cotton canvas top layer, an absorbent inner core and a waterproof under layer.

I am a mum to two outdoor-loving and adventurous boys. I love spending time exploring the outdoors with my boys and learning about the world through their unique perspective (and active imagination). I hand sew all the picnic blankets in my home, and hope that each blanket inspires someone to spend more time outdoors, being refreshed by nature.

What made you apply to Handmade?

Over the last few years Handmade Canberra has been my ‘go to’ for gift buying. I usually write a list of the birthdays, baby showers, engagements and weddings I have coming up, or the Christmas presents I have to buy, ready for my visit to Handmade. I love gifting unique handmade products to my family and friends. I think our Emby Love Picnic Blankets make a perfect gift, so selling them at the Handmade Market seemed like a logical step.

What’s the best thing about Canberra?

The best thing about Canberra is the outdoor spaces that change with the seasons. Canberra has fabulous parks filled with autumn leaves or spring blossoms, beautiful rivers to cool off in over summer, and snow capped mountains to climb in the winter. It is so easy to explore the outdoors while still being only 10-20 minutes from home.

What’s the best way to keep warm in Winter?

I love to keep warm in Winter by finding the perfect picnic spot in full winter sun and enjoy it in the middle of the day, lazing about and enjoying a warm cup of tea from the thermos and a good book.

Can you describe your studio/place of work?

My favourite thing about my workspace is my sewing desk, a solid hardwood 1960s desk that we bought off Gumtree for $30. It had good bones but needed some serious love. My husband sanded it back, revarnished it, fixed a few drawers and reinforced the “wobbly bits”… and now.. it is BEAUTIFUL. It is big enough to hold my overlocker, sewing machine and laptop, while still having plenty of room to cut and measure fabric. It has plenty of storage, and has become a statement piece of furniture in our lounge room.

In our open plan home, I can work at my desk, while having dinner simmering or watching the boys playing in the backyard. I love that my workspace is so centrally located in our home, ensuring I’m connected to my family even when I’m sewing.
