Jane Brown has always loved jewellery and design, but it wasn’t until she was 30 that she was fortunate to be exposed to the pearl market while living in Beijing right as it started to expand in the early 1990s. She used to take visitors, family and friends to the pearl market when it was located along the walls of the Temple of Heaven. Later it was moved to a much bigger, purpose built shopping centre close by called Hong Qiao. The quality of Chinese pearls has risen immensely since their emergence onto the world market. “I have loved being a tiny part of that process and could write a book about all my experiences and people met at the Hong Qiao Pearl Market,” says Jane.
Shortly after she left China in 1995, Jane started a business designing and importing pearl jewellery. “I could taste, touch and feel Beijing and wanted to return often! What better way to do that than start a business and that is how Jane Brown Pearls was born. I am passionate about delivering great quality coupled with fantastic design. I can happily spend hours choosing pearls for their shape, colour and above all their lustre. I love re-inventing designs and my dining room table is usually awash with pearls, elastic, sterling silver pins and earring fittings, beads etc. I love creating and making jewellery that will make people happy!”
Jane loves Handmade because the support of designers is second to none with “good humour and unparalleled organisational skills!” She believes that Handmade Canberra has set the bench mark where local small business can use the shop and the market to add value to their presence in the market place and showcase their goods to a larger customer base.
She is a frequent visitor to many cafés around Canberra, meeting up with friends and customers, but particularly enjoys the Campos coffee @ Farmers Daughter, Yarralumla. She enjoys walking around the lake and playing tennis from time to time, visiting the gym and seeing her Pilates instructor, which she believes is “essential.” She finds visiting the National Library and Portrait Gallery inspirational and is fond of Canberra’s New Acton precinct because “it’s really inspired a groundswell of talent and design”. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us Jane, and we know this giveaway will be well-received!
