It’s here again. The Handmade Market will open at 10am tomorrow and run until 4pm, and then we’ll do it all again on Sunday.
In two halls, The Budawang and Coorong Pavilions at EPIC, there will be over 250 stalls of the finest homewares, fashion, accessories, gifts, toiletries, produce and street food. Come along and support the design community, enjoy a great meal, coffee, wine or cocktail, listen to the live music and soak up the unique atmosphere that is Handmade.
Here are our tips for a stress-free experience:
TRAFFIC & PARKING
Canberra’s fairly busy at the moment, and with upgrades to major roads and the works on the new Light Rail line, there are a few changes to access around Exhibition Park that you need to know about.
Firstly, the main front entrance to EPIC from Flemington Road will be closed for the Handmade Market this weekend. There are two alternative access points. One is from the entrance on Northbourne Avenue (A23) next to Macdonalds and the other is at the back of EPIC, with access from either Old Well Station Drive (off Northbourne Avenue) or Morriset Road (off Flemington Road).
There will be plenty of stewards at EPIC directing you to the parking areas, whichever entrance you choose. Here is a map to help you. If you’d rather catch a bus, there are two bus stops adjacent to EPIC, one on the Federal Highway, one on Flemington Road. We hope you have a safe journey.
Many of our designers have eftpos facilities to take payment, but there are smaller emerging designers that may not, so we recommend you bring along some cash. There are three ATMs in the two halls, so you won’t be caught short.
If you would like to arrive in the morning, there will be coffee and snacks available in our gourmet food hall from 9.45am so you can start the day with your caffeine fix before shopping begins at 10. The market opens at 10am and will trade until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Whether you arrive early or later, there are locations in both halls for snacks and relaxation, so you you can come for an hour or come for the day!
Where do we start? Coffee, cold drinks, snacks, meals and sweet treats are all available in our gourmet food hall in the Coorong Building, along with wine and other drinks. There is also an area for refreshments in the Budawang Building. Finding the right food for you will not be a problem. Tearing yourself away might be!
If you have come to visit particular designers, or maybe you are on a strict time limit, there is a list/map of stalls between the halls. Or seek out our friendly Handmade staff at the reception desk. For a full directory listing, have a look at our online magazine, or check out the directory on the website. To find out more about our amazing designers and producers, head to our blog for articles and interviews.
There are several toilets in each hall, with baby changing and a breastfeeding room available. Please ask at reception (between the halls) if you’re lost.
We don’t charge you to enter the market, so please enjoy with our compliments. We’d appreciate it if you could take the time on your way in to the Handmade Market to stop by the friendly volunteers from Anglicare. Donations supporting this organisation that helps families doing it tough would be most appreciated! We will also be hosting The Vinnies Blanket Drive. Bring your spare warm clothes, blankets, sleeping bags and sanitary items (toothpaste, soap etc.) and hand them to the wonderful volunteers at the St Vincent de Paul stall. Please give generously.
We hope you have a wonderful visit to Handmade and thank you for supporting Australian designers.
See you tomorrow!
